Sony has commenced the rollout for Android 11 on its 2019 flagship smartphone devices – the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5. The Android 11 update is arriving through new firmware build version 55.2.A.0.630, and is already available across a number of regions including Russia and South East Asia. The update was due to land from February 2021 according to Sony’s initial Android 11 roadmap, so it’s great to see an early rollout.

As per usual with Sony, there is no changelog included with the rollout. What we do know is that the firmware rolls with the same December 2020 security patches compared to the prior Android 10 firmware (build number 55.1.A.12.28). From initial reports, we also know that Sony has not included the new Photography Pro app, as seen in the 2020 flagship devices. The stock camera app also uses the older interface, so no refresh here. If you’ve updated, please let us know your impressions in the comments below.

Other firmware updates that have also arrived recently, include the Xperia 1 II (Mark 2) which saw its build number move to 58.1.A.1.178 with the addition of December 2020 security patches. The budget Xperia L3 and L4 series have also seen December 2020 security patches in their latest updates that are currently rolling. Full details of firmware numbers are in the table below.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact also gets Android 9.0 Pie OTA update. Sony is now getting into the Android update game. Their latest flagship Xperia XZ3 just launched this month with Android 9.0 Pie firmware out of the box. In order to be among the first group of manufacturers releasing the latest Android OS version, Sony if now rolling out Android 9.0 Pie OTA update for Xperia XZ2 and many of its variants. So download and install the latest full stock firmware from below.

The new Android 9.0 Pie OTA update for Xperia XZ2 comes with firmware build number 52.0.A.3.27. This is the same build number as that of the Xperia XZ3 flagship. Sony Mobile is now pushing the latest firmware update for the Xperia XZ Premium and XZ1 family, moving the build number from 47.1.A.12.270 to version 47.1.A.16.20. This latest update includes the 1 September 2018 Android security patches.

So no Android Pie just yet, but it has been caught testing on the Xperia XZ Premium, so hopefully Sony will meet its November deadline.
